The Fourth Principle of Personal Transformation

Over the past few months we’ve been writing about the 5 Principles of Personal (and Organizational) Transformation.  To read an introductory overview of these principles, read our earlier blog: Transforming Your Performance – and Your Life! by Partner Lloyd Franke.

Today’s post is about the 4th Principle – Live your Values by Best Year Yet Program Leader and Trainer Diana Baysinger.  From the time she joined our global community, Di has been our champion of values, bringing them boldly into every training, program and presentation she’s made for her clients and our community.

Naturally just a few days ago, knowing that our next blog topic on the 5 Principles was due to be on the 4th principle, the following article appeared in my Inbox – proving yet again that she is an inspiring examples of her passion for Values.

Live Your Values

by Diana Baysinger

As a Best Year Yet partner, I am always thinking of ways to deepen the 10 questions of the Best Year Yet planning workshop and to create ways to assist clients and corporations in living their plan more fully.

Question 5 What are my values?  This question is at the center of the BYY planning process.  What makes us unique as individuals, teams and organizations is how we live our values. How do we take the words from question 5 and create life around them?

Our values are at the very core of our being.  They are the essence of who we are.   When we are aligned with our values and construct action that is driven from those values, we experience success, passion and a sense of purpose.  When we are not aligned with our values and when our thinking or behavior is in conflict with what we value, we often experience a sense of fear, failure, frustration and disappointment.

Think about the climate of your personal and professional life for a moment.

How would you rate the quality of your alignment?  Where would you benefit from a value tune up?

There are many value words common to all of us.

Individuals value

  • Integrity
  • Trust
  • Love
  • Family
  • creativity
  • Fun
  • Making a difference
  • Friendship
  • Health
  • Nature
  • Spirituality

Organizations and teams value:

  • Accountability
  • Loyalty
  • Collaboration
  • Solutions
  • Respect
  • Trust,
  • Open communication.

When was the last time you experienced really living a value that brought you great satisfaction in your personal life?  When was the last time you experienced a value that produced the results you wanted in your professional life?  What were the ingredients present in those moments that produced a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction?

Look at the design below and respond to the questions asked.

V = Values What is most important at the core of your being?
A = Action How does your behavior reflect your values?
L = Life How would you rate your current quality of life?

1 – Exceptional

2 – Good

3 – OK

4 – Needs improvement

5 – Out of control

U = Understanding What values are behind the 1, 2 and 3 ratings and what values are being compromised in the 4 and 5 ratings?
E = Excellence What changes can you make that will enable you to be the best you can be?
S = Success Are you ready to live the life you truly want?

I invite you to create one goal for the next 30 days. Make sure that it aligns with one of your values.  Choose a value that brings you joy or one that if you were truly living it more fully would create deep satisfaction. I guarantee you will experience an increase in your passion and purpose when you put this goal to practice.
